Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
