Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress Following Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
